Serving Children Ages 3+ with Speech Sound Disorders

As a Pediatric Speech Therapist, I specialize in working with children who three years old and older, who are suspected to have Speech Sound Disorders (SSDs).  These errors in speech prevent children from communicating effectively.

There are various types of SSDs that occur in childhood.  I treat children with the following delays or disorders:

Articulation Disorders- these are distortions (ex. producing a lisp for instead of a precise 's' sound) or substitutions (ex. saying 'w' for 'r' in the word 'rabbit') of specific speech sounds.

Phonological Disorders- these occur when children don't use the predictable rules that affect our language.  For example, when a child exhibits 'fronting', he/she produces all sounds with the front of their tongue instead of using the back of their tongue to produce sounds when appropriate (ex. 'tat' for the word 'cat').

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)- this is a motor based disorder where children have difficulties coordinating all the movements required for smooth, reliable production of speech sounds and words.  Often children with CAS know what they want to say, but words come out 'jumbled' and effective communication is often frustrating.

Therapy Sessions
I provide speech therapy intervention for children (ages 3+) with speech sound disorders (SSDs).  Services are provided in my home office in Draper, Utah near Corner Canyon High School.

During our sessions, I work with children and their parents or caregivers to form a team.  Together we target areas of the speech deficit and remedy the errors in the most efficient manner possible.

For this reason, it is expected that parents will be involved in our sessions and, with my guidance, help their child practice their speech sounds at home over the course of the coming week.

Caregivers can be parents, nanny's, teachers...anyone who regularly interacts with the child and can help encourage positive communication skills.

Together we can make a great team!
What therapy looks like:
During a typical 45 minute session, we discuss how practice went over the previous week, review our goals/strategies and then build on our strategies to improve our target sound(s).

I use toys, games, art, cooking, etc throughout sessions to encourage drillwork in a fun atmosphere.  I encourage repetition and build increasing levels of challenge into each session.

Therapy Scheduling
I am available to work with families on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Attendance

It is very important for your child to attend their regularly scheduled appointments. These scheduled appointments are part of a recommended therapy plan aimed at improving speech and language goals and the overall quality of life of your child. Without regular and consistent attendance, the benefits of therapy will be limited, the overall therapy will take longer, and we risk losing your child’s attention/motivation level.

Holiday Closures
Services will not be provided on the following dates:
March/April- 1 week vacation for Spring Break (depending on your school district/preference)
          July 4th week
          Thanksgiving Week
          Christmas Week thru New Years

Cancellations

Clients are expected to show up on time.  Late arrivals are not guaranteed a full session (I will accommodate as much as my schedule allows).

Clients are required to attend at least 80% of their sessions in a three month period or risk losing their therapy appointment slot.

Please provide as much notice as possible for cancellations.  This allows me to fill that slot with new client testing, planning, etc.

Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice for 'non-emergency' cancellations (vacation, family events, doctor appointments, etc) will be charged the entire session fee.

Emergency cancellations are only accepted for illness of the child or an immediate family member (ex. fever within the past 24 hours, unidentified rash, diarrhea, vomiting, pink eye, strep, other contagious illness).
After 3 emergency cancellations, the family will be charged $45 per subsequent cancelled session.

If I cancel your appointment for some unforeseen reason, I will try to offer another day/time to reschedule your appointment.

Referrals

My business is built on referrals, which are greatly appreciated.
I will provide a $50 Amazon gift card for each new client referral who completes services for more than two months.
